Sciatica Pain Relief Tips

Sciatica is a condition in which pain shoots down an leg or arm as a result of a pinched nerve. Pain that runs along the course of the sciatic nerve is referred to by laypersons as sciatica. It especially appears in the back of the thigh also causing pain in the lower back, buttocks, hips, and/or adjacent parts. Sciatica is pain caused by general compression and/or irritation of one of five nerve roots that are branches of the sciatic nerve. The pain is felt in the lower back, buttock, and/or various parts of the leg and foot.

Are there risk factors for back pain? And, if there are, what can I do to keep myself healthy and well? Your chiropractor can help answer these questions and more.

The single most useful thing is a back rehabilitation course. It consisted of exercises which strengthen the spinal muscles and surrounding muscles. Also try and find a pain support group which you can attend. Others in the same situation can be a great support. Some groups also have relaxation sessions, hypnotism and other alternative remedy sessions to help their members.

One primary risk factor relates to exercise. Everyone has heard, "if you don't use it, you lose it". If you're not exercising regularly, your back muscles are deconditioned and much more susceptible to injury - the strains and sprains we're accustomed to calling "back pain".

A related risk factor is weak abdominal muscles. When you were a kid, at some point one of your gym teachers probably told you to "suck in your stomach". Actually, it turns out that was pretty good advice. Your abdominal muscles support the muscles of your lower back. If your abdominals are weak or if you're not using them - letting them hang out and droop instead of keeping them activated - your body weight has to be held up by the muscles of your lower back. They're not designed to do that - they're designed to move your spine around. And eventually, these lower back muscles will give way under the excess strain. The result is a very painful lower back injury.

Surgery for sciatica might be warranted if the sciatic nerve pain is severe and has not been relieved with appropriate manual or medical treatments. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they have any symptoms of progressive lower extremity weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control.

Learning about potential risk factors and taking appropriate action will help ensure a stronger, more flexible, and healthier lower back. By Dr. Ralph Santonastaso

Muscles get stronger when they're required to do work. Also exercise helps "train" the soft tissues around a joint - the ligaments and tendons - these supporting structures "learn" how to withstand mechanical stresses and loads without becoming injured. Basically, when you exercise - when you do any kind of exercise - your body gets "smarter" and you're less likely to get those annoying back problems.1

Most physicians avoid prescribing medications for pregnant patients suffering from sciatica but there are several steps that can be taken to relieve or decrease the discomfort. This includes:

??? Swimming and walking are excellent exercises if not contra-indicated by the physician. ??? Avoid walking on an incline as this can cause joint irritation and lead to problems.

This kind of a pain can occur when the sciatic nerve gets pressed as a result of pressing it against a hard tool or keeping something thick like cards or wallets in ones back pocket or even by wearing a tight belt. But such pain can be cured by performing a number of exercises under the supervision of a physical therapist.

The largest bone in ones body-the sciatic nerve has a tendency to be a bit uncomforting and can cause a great amount of pain in ones buttocks. The pain that occurs in the sciatic nerve that affects the buttocks and goes down to the knees is known as sciatica. In this case it is quite natural that the pain is felt especially in one of the parts of the hip.

??? Massage to reduce muscle tension. Some experts believe that tightness in the gluteus and psosas muscles contribute to sciatic pain. Treatment once or twice a week can help relieve stress on weight-bearing joints.

??? Bedrest may be necessary at times. ??? See your physician if the pain becomes unmanageable. Sciatica is unique to a pregnancy and may gradually disappear on its own. Just because you had sciatica in one pregnancy does not mean it will appear in a subsequent one.

Oil of wintergreen, which contains methyl salicylate, is widely used externally for its anti-inflammatory activity for arthritis, rheumatism, sciatica, and sore muscles.

Generally, sciatica is something older people have to endure. Perhaps it's a simple matter of a hip or pelvic bone out of place. Sciatic pain is more commonly due to a back problem not a leg or knee problem. Have you had an MRI of your lower back, I would ask your Dr. about that, especially at your young age.

Sciatica can occur at any time in a normal pregnancy but it is most common during the second and third trimester, when the baby is larger and carried lower in the abdomen. Known as Pregnancy-Related Sciatica, it is caused by the pressure of the baby on the sciatic nerve. This is the largest nerve in the body, about the diameter of a finger. Its fibers branch off the spinal cord at the 4th and 5th lumbar vertebra (L4, L5) and the first few segments of the sacrum.

??? Williams Exercises have been developed specifically for use during pregnancy. They may temporarily relieve sciatica pain as they help strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, the back and abdomen.

In addition, these helpful habits may decrease the chances of developing sciatica: ??? Avoid hours of sitting slumped at a computer or standing with a baby on one hip. Both can contribute to lower back pain.

??? Maintain proper posture and try to stand straight. ??? Wear flat shoes or ones with a very low heel. Avoid shoes that throw your weight backwards.

Risk factors for back pain may also be found in your personal and family medical history.2,3 During your initial visit your chiropractor will ask you about accidents and surgeries you've experienced, and discuss any important elements in your family history. For example, surgery to remove an inflamed gallbladder or appendix or to repair a hernia may result in weakened abdominal muscles. A motor vehicle accident or a fall from a height may have caused injuries that healed with soft tissue scarring.

There are many easy-to-do exercises for your abdominal muscles. The key is to actually do them - and do them after you're finished doing the rest of whatever exercises you've scheduled for that day. How often? Three times a week is plenty. Abdominal routines are quick - no more than 10 minutes. And, remember to use your abdominal muscles throughout the day. Imagine your abdominals are being pulled in and lifted up. This is not a "tightening" - your thought should be "activate". Your body will know what to do, once you've started adding consistent abdominal training to your exercise routine.

Never put ice directly on your skin, but try putting it into a ziptop bag, put that into a damp clothe, and put that onto you effected side buttock for about 20 minutes. This should help relax the piriformis, which could be in spasm, causing sciatic nerve pain.

Stay active and go outside. As annoying as it is sometimes to not relax on the sofa, it is really good for you to stay active. If that means walking then fine. Well, there is a fairly new one-time treatment called Atlasprofilax. This treatment really seems to stop a main cause of sciatica, and I know of some persons who got rid of all symptoms within a short period of time.

Unfortunately, if you don't get professional help, it is a condition that can worsen over time and will certainly not heal itself. You can find chiropractors in your area that are willing to adjust their pricing according to your needs and income.

People can even get relief from sciatica from massage. For this purpose a therapist can be consulted. Once the massage over the effected part is done it is suggested to rub the painful area with a cube of ice or with a piece of wet cloth. Massage also helps in preventing sciatica related problems.

Another way of curing the problem would be with the help of yoga. One might need surgery if sciatica is caused by a hernia in the disk then one might need a surgery. Yoga plays a great deal in curing the problem. Daily stretches also serves as a good precautionary protection against due to sciatica.

Some doctors suggest hydrotherapy. According to some doctors taking a bath might provide some relief from sciatica. In such an exercise one is expected to soak his/her body in water (as warm as the body temperature).then one is expected to soak his/her body in water for around 20 minutes. The bath is finished by taking a shower. A hot water shower is recommended.

Try ibuprofen,( if you are not pregnant) it helps a bit sometimes, and a hot water bottle, and lay down for a while. Also hot bath sometimes helps.

As the pregnancy develops, the abdominal tendons and ligaments become looser to prepare for childbirth. The backs of some women become quite unstable and prone to injury. Medical evaluation should always be sought. In some cases, sciatic pain is due to pressure on the nerve that is caused by damage to the disc between the vertebrae of the spine. This creates inflammation and pain and requires specific treatment.

??? When getting out of bed, try rolling onto your side first, letting the weight of your feet and legs dangling over the edge of the bed, pull your body into a sitting position. This puts less stress on the lower back, helping you to avoid triggering a painful muscle spasm.

Going to see a Massage Therapist will help alot. They can show you some stretches you can do at home to loosen up your muscles in your low back ,legs and butt, that will help out alot.

Imagine the surprise a woman must feel while dealing with the physical symptoms and discomforts of pregnancy, to suddenly develop severe back pain. This is not the usual low back pain that is often experienced during pregnancy; it is sciatica. This sharp, shooting pain usually starts in the buttocks and radiates down the back or side of the thigh to the calf and possibly the heel. There may be paralyzing numbness, in addition to the pain, which can be severe enough to limit mobility.

It is suggested not to perform such an exercise in case of swelling of the sciatic nerve. It is suggested to pregnant women not to apply excessive pressure while performing the exercise. Or else the certain nerves could be stimulated. This could lead into the pelvic area.
